Born in London in 1971, Yannis Triphyllis is a member of the 4th generation of the Efstathios Gourdomichalis (& Carras/Fatsis of Chios) shipping families on his maternal side, and of the 3rd generation of ship owners on his paternal side.

Yannis studied International Relations and Economics at Harvard University, Cambridge MA 1990-94 where he received his BA “Cum Laude”, having earlier graduated  “Magna Cum Laude” from Athens College, Greece in 1990. He recently received a diploma in the International Law of the Sea by IDIS, of Pandeion Univerity, 2023

He has been actively involved in shipping for the past 25 years, and participates in the Board of several high level Maritime Institutions including the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (since 2012-), where he served on the Executive Committee from 2015-2024, and the BoD of the UK DEFENCE CLUB (since 2008-) the world leader in its class, with 4,000 vessel members. He is a member of the UGS Foreign Affairs Committee (since 2006-) and has been repeatedly elected to the Piraeus Marine Club Board (from 2006-2021). He has the privilege of serving his second term as Treasurer on the BoD of the Hellenic Maritime Museum, (since 2020-).

He has been a member of the ELIAMEP Advisory Board, Greece’s leading Geopolitical Think Tank, since  2018, while he has also served on the Executive Committee of the HARVARD SCHOOL of PUBLIC HEALTH (HSPH) from 2006-2012

 

He has participated in, and organized, numerous conferences and events focusing on both Maritime and Geopolitical themes incl. the 23.3.2023  “SAFETY of NAVIGATION from EAST MED to INDOPACIFIC” seminar with the Embassy of Japan in Athens and the PMC “NEW WORLD ORDER” lecture series and the “BICENTENIAL CELEBRATION of GREAT POWERS”.

As well as three unique Environmentally focused events: the “Greek Forest Fire Prevention Conferencein 2008, the 3 day “Lebanese Oil Spill Impact Assesment Conference” after an Israeli shelling of a Lebanese refinery unit in 2007, and the  “1st international IACS Conference,” the only webinar of its kind globally to focus exclusively on the IMO’s recent environmental regulations.

He has chaired the Lloyds Informa ShipFinance Conference twice in 2008-9, and participated in all 8 Shipping & the Law Conferences in Napoli, and both World Shipping Law 2019 & 2020 in Athens as well as a great number of Mare Forum events for over a decade in various countries around the world.

Yannis had the highest honour of representing Greek Shipping for the Hellenic Republic’s 200 Year of Independence as co-author of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping’s White Paper in the “Bicentennial Forum 2040” event at the Senate of the Hellenic Parliament.

Yannis is a licensed and skilled sailing & motor boat skipper and scuba diver, who has crossed the Atlantic. He is a Posidonia Sailing Cup Holder in both the Amateur (2008) and Racing (2018 & 2022) divisions as crew and/or member of the sponsoring organisation
